Local Grocery Store

This is something that everyone has – so make the most of it! At least around us, the basic local grocery offers a good selection of everything you expect a grocery store would have, but usually the prices are at a big mark-up. We basically look at our grocery store as a source for some essential staples and beyond that, it’s an opportunity to go bargain-hunting when things go on sale. The running challenge is to save more than we spend from the sales – we’ve hit the mark a few times, but you have to try really hard.

Pros:

National name brands, good selection, predictable, bargain-hunting opportunities, cheap beer (we’re not too good for PBR and High Life), prevelant almost everywhere.

Cons:

High mark-up when items are not on sale, possibility of less-than-fresh produce and meats, larger store can mean a larger hassle, usually not-so-friendly staff.

WHAT WE BUY AT OUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE:

  • Better for Bread Flour
  • Cheap beer
  • Ice Cream
  • Meats (only when they’re on sale)
  • Produce (when on sale and looking fresh)
  • Basic condiments
  • Cooking oil (not olive oil)
  • Soy sauce
  • Texas Pete

WHAT YOU SHOULDN’T BUY AT YOUR LOCAL GROCERY STORE:

  • Wine
  • Olive oil
  • Cheese
  • Not fresh produce
  • Bread (make it instead!)
