Thanks to our friend John, we’ve found an amazing dinner option for a special occasion… or just a Tuesday night that needs a little bit more culinary inspiration than the usual. These mussels are great as an appetizer or as a main course. Though not mentioned in the recipe itself, it is ESSENTIAL to also have a good crusty baguette to mop up the remaining broth in the bottom of your bowl. (We would, of course, recommend Trader Joe’s baguettes for price and taste.)

1 pound fresh mussels $5.00
1 cup dry white wine $1.00
1 cup water $free
1/2 onion $0.20
4 cloves garlic, minced $0.40
1 tablespoon thyme $0.10
4 tablespoons butter $0.16
1 tablespoon olive oil $0.10
Total Price $6.96
Chop the onions and mince the garlic. Saute the onions in the butter and the olive oil in a big pan. Add the garlic after the onions begin to soften. (The garlic might turn blue. Don’t worry. It’s a reaction between the butter and a natural chemical in the garlic.)
After about 2-3 minutes, when it gets to smelling really good, add the wine and the water. Let this simmer for about 3-5 minutes. Add the mussels and cover the pan. Check in about 2-4 minutes. When they pop open, they’re done!
Serve in a bowl with the remaining broth and ENJOY!
sounds like an amazing recipe – bet the ladies love it.
Where did you guys get your mussels? Hope you are having a great summer!
Melissa
Hey Melissa-
These came from Fresh Market and we thought they were really great. Sometimes Bloom has them, and they’re cheaper there, but not quite as good. Hope your summer is going well too! See you soon-
